REIKI AND ISLAM

This is an email produced below for the benefit of our Muslim brothers and sisters.

Since, I was confused about Reiki, particularly use of signs, its attunement and applications and was worried if, it is against the spirit of Islam and could disturb our believes. So I had sent a query to “The Consul of Ulmaas” through a website few months ago. For which I have received the response today. Copy of which (my question and its answer is being appended as a reference particularly for those, who have such worries in their minds. You will note that response is quite positive and negates my worries.

Answer could be seen directly from the following website as well using this code: BWPFUB

Thanks & Regards,

Zubair Baig

  1. Dear Sir,

Assalam-o-alykum. Reiki is a Japanese art for healing which was re-discovered by Mikao Usui in early 1900. this is a way of treatment with the energy through the hands. While giving treatment, there is no such concept which is against our belief. However, the way of attunement and use of some signs before a treatment is disturbing me, as it seem to be derived from Buddha’s thoughts. Although, I use Reiki with very firm believe on Allah, and there is no teaching of Buddha’s thoughts at all. Rather it is told to pray from Allah before giving treatment to anybody and always hope but only from Allah for the recovery of the patient. Could you please let me know if Reiki practice does have any interaction with teachings of Islam.

Thanks and regards,
Allah Hafiz,
Zubair

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear brother in Islam, thanks a lot for your question which reflects your care to have a sound belief and faith. Allah commands Muslims to refer to people of knowledge to get themselves well-acquainted with the teachings of Islam as well as aspects of life.

In his response to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

“If the kind of treatment you have indicated does not involve any procedures unacceptable in Islam, and there is no assuming of invoking anyone other than Allah for healing, then there is nothing in Islam objectionable to this practice.

In fact, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught us that if anyone can help his brother or sister in any way, let him do so without hesitation. Therefore,if Reiki has been found to be a beneficial matter of treatment, a Muslim should never hesitate in making use of it.”

Also, the prominent Muslim scholar, Sheikh Muhammed Iqbal Nadvi, Imam of Calgary Mosque, Alberta, Canada and Former Professor at King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, adds:

“These healing methods have two sides:

From one side, they heal body, physically and mentally by some experience and knowledge. However, from the other perspective, such practices incorporate many of the beliefs from other religions and sometimes include superstitions.

Thus, if a Muslim uses those methods masterly and is able to separate, the science of body healing from ideology, then it may be used; otherwise, it should be not.”

If you are still in need of more information, don’t hesitate to contact us. Do keep in touch. May Allah guide us all to the straight path!

Allah Almighty knows the best.
